We are smack dab in the middle of one of the biggest and most influential contemporary and modern art fairs of the year: The Armory. Named after it's famous big sister, the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art originally held in New York's 69th Regiment Armory, the modern day Armory is now in it's 15th year. Now shown in Piers 92 and 94, the show has a goal of bringing leading international contemporary and modern works to full view. I cannot overestimate the importance of this show for people like myself who live for contemporary art.

Since I can't be there this weekend, I thought I'd share with you my 7 favorite works from each respective Pier. Please note this is just a little teeny tiny slice of the amazingness that is there.
In Pier 94

Stretching drawing #6, Julianne Swartz

A son of the circus (2012), Jarmo Makila

Black Head I (2012), Ashley Bickerton

Untitled (2012), Jose DaVila
I love the similarities between this piece and the Modern's Untitled (1967) by Donald Judd.

Unititled (Hold) 23 (2013), Florian Schmidt

MK1 from Musthroom Kingdon series (2013), Oleg Dou

Yoshiwara (2012), Ron Van Der Ende
Pier 92

Beethoven's Trumpet (With Ear), John Baldessari

James Joyce (2012), Duane Michals

Guy Bourdin + Cindy Sherman, Edition 1 of 5 (2012), Trisha Holt

The River (2010), Tom Stogdon

Rid Space (2003), Otto Piene

Requiem (2011), Nathalia Edenmont

I am an American (2013), Yamada Shuhei
I think what I love most about this show is the incredible diversity with the 'Modern and Contemporary' art world. There are some truly innovative artists represented this year, so it's really no surprise to me that there's a broad base of styles represented. Hopefully you're able to find a new favorite artist or work and be challenged by just as many!
Lucky enough to be in or near Manhattan this weekend?
Ticket prices are just $10 for students and $30 for general admission.
Don't forget to scoop up a Catalogue!
Admiring from afar?
Explore the Armory online and through it's partnership with Artsy.net (which I love).
