Theory and Practice, 2013
Today's Fresh Art Friday highlights the work of artist Gerry Bergstein.
Bergestein was born in 1947 and has already had several iterations of work. While each 'style' is distinctly different in look, I find that all of his work contrasts the manic and melancholic of life by juxtaposing images you wouldn't typically find together.

Self Portrait as a Fur Covered Volcanoe, 1985
Bergstein's work often includes figures from his own life (see self portrait above and below), so it's not uncommon for his pieces to feel like crazy extended family reunions.

Oops!, 2000
In addition to finding influences in his personal life, Bergstein is influenced by the greats such as Leonardo da Vinci, Freud and Celmins. I think the fact that he quotes Groucho Marx AND the Beatles in his artist statement says more about him than almost anything else.

Babel, 2001
Hellllooooooo Gorgeous
The artist is presently working in Mixed Media, resulting in lush, saturated images that are visually stimulating. Energy is on full display.

Elementary My Dear Watson, 2006

Oversize Load, 2012

Adventures in the Black Hole, 2012

Genius at Work in 3d, 2013
Bergstein's current show, Theory and Practice, runs from March 1-March 23rd at Gallery NAGA in Boston, where is he a well known local artist. Click over there to see some closeups of the work.
